North Korea has responded to President Donald Trump’s threat of ‘fire and fury’ by declaring it is considering a missile strike on the US Pacific territory of Guam.
Pyongyang said it was “carefully examining” a plan to strike Guam, located 2,100 miles away, and threatened to create an “enveloping fire” around the US-owned territory.
This comes as America is warned to not become embroiled in the political military-motivated reactive slagging match with North Korea, due to the potentially disastrous consequences.
Guam Governor Eddie Calvo released a video message to the residents of the US military base – including a submarine squadron, an airbase and a coastguard group – reassuring them the island is prepared for ‘any eventuality’.
Calvo added:
My Homeland Security Advisor who is in communications with Homeland Security and Department of Defense notes that there is no change in threat level resulting from North Korea events. HSA George Charfauros reminds us that there are several levels of defense [sic] all strategically placed to protect our island and our nation.
Additionally, I have reached out to the White House this morning. An attack or threat to Guam is a threat or attack on the United States. They have said that America will be defended.

North Korea previously declared itself ready for war with the US, and said President Donald Trump’s deterrents will not work.
A state TV broadcast back in March told the North Korean peoples their homeland does not fear possible preemptive military actionto halt its nuclear and missile buildup.
The assertions directly responded to US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, and his talk of tougher sanctions, more pressure and possible military action.

The nuclear force of [North Korea] is the treasured sword of justice and the most reliable war deterrence to defend the socialist motherland and the life of its people.
We have the will and capability to fully respond to any war which the US wants. If the businessmen-turned-US officials thought that they would frighten us, they would soon recognise that their method would not work.

The rebuke came after Rex Tillerson signalled a tougher strategy and offered the possibility of preemptive military action against the North.
On a visit to the heavily militarised border between North and South Korea, Tillerson stated:
Let me be very clear: The policy of strategic patience has ended. We are exploring a new range of diplomatic, security and economic measures. All options are on the table.

The broadcast sparks fears as tensions rise while North Korean military powers have accelerated its nuclear weapons development programme, conducting a series of ballistic missile tests and attempting to miniaturise a nuclear warhead able to be mounted on an inter-continental ballistic missile.
The country is violating multiple UN Security Council resolutions without being deterred by sanctions. Experts warn North Korea could have nuclear warheads capable of reaching US soil in the next few years.
