Lagos opens resettlement camp for occupants of distressed and defective building

...Urges Occupants to Vacate Premises and Take Advantage of The Igando Camp

As part of the efforts of the Lagos State Government in providing succour to victims of various emergency, disasters as well as to mitigate its impact, the Lagos State Government has reiterated its readiness to accommodate the affected residents of the ongoing demolished defective and distressed buildings on Lagos Island to the Lagos State Relief Resettlement Centre Igando,in Alimosho Local Government Area of the State.

Speaking today, while on media tour of the Resettlement Centre in Igando, the Commissioner, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Honourable Kehinde Bamigbetan stated that the State Government is working in line with international best practices as it begins the resettling of persons displaced by the on-going demolitions of defective and distressed buildings in Lagos Island Area of the State.

The Commissioner said that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency's Resettlement Camp and Relief Centre in Igando, which has been approved is ready to accommodate five hundred displaced persons starting from Tuesday, March 26th 2019.

Bamigbetan said the exercise is part of the state government's efforts to ensure that the effect of losing their homes is mitigated to the barest minimum.

On his part, General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, AdesinaTiamiyu explained that the camp would be opened for three months after which the government would review the need for an extension.

Tiamiyu also said the camp will be working with the Igando General Hospital in case of referrals, just as he added that the medical team for the camp would arrive tomorrow.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Prince Rotimi Ogunleye urged residents of distressed buildings marked for demolition to vacate premises and take advantage of the Igando Resettlement Camp and Relief Centre which has five hostels with twenty-two rooms each, four double bunk beds and is capable of accommodating eight persons per room, opened by the State government as a temporary relief from accommodation problems.

The Centre also features a kitchen facility, a dining hall, a general hall to be used for recreational activities, a three ward medical facility, a set of ten toilets and bathrooms for each hostel, sets of three bedroom flats for members of staff, facilities for persons living with disabilities, security post among others.

LASBCA, he said, has stepped up measures to prevent further loss of lives with the demolition of 25 distressed buildings already identified by the Agency.
